A girl bike?

The other morning Sean called me at work to say he couldn't ride his bike to work because it had a flat tire and he needed me to come rescue him (I had driven that day). "Can't you just ride my bike? It's sitting right next to yours and offers the very same function." His response- "Um, no...it's a girl bike." "What the...!" I said, "you can't be serious?!?" In turns out that he was serious. So serious, in fact, that he said he'd rather walk to work than ride a girl bike. I was blown away. This is Sean we are talking about...

the kid that will shave his hair into a mullet for a one-night-only demolition derby...

the kid that will put on tiny girl shorts just to shock his mother in law...

the kid who will, in the process of shaving off his 5in long hair, take a 48hr Mohawk pit stop...

the kid that has the hardest time 'just' smiling when someone snaps of photo of him...

the kid who chooses to build 'the ginger-Berlin-wall' instead of a 'ginger bread house' like the rest of us...

the kid who thinks the rind of a pumpkin might taste good...

the kid who chooses to be a BUNNY for Halloween! OK, so I begged him to do it, but he agreed!

the kid who feels that playing with slim is an acceptable past time...

Do you see where I am going with this? Given all this evidence I was simply under the impression that Sean wasn't real worried about sometimes doing things that are 'different'. So, when he said he was too embarrassed to ride a GIRL BIKE in public you can see why I just didn't understand. He explained to me that it was just ingrained in him from childhood, 'a guy just doesn't ride a girl bike. It's just not done.' To prove this eternal truth to me we proceeded to ask males the rest of the day if they felt the same way, and sure enough only 1 out of 8 said he'd have been OK with riding the bike. I felt better about Sean's 'behavior' when I saw that so many others felt the same, but I really don't think I'll ever fully understand. I figure though, if I can live through all the other crazy 'adventures' he embarks upon, I can surely manage to accept his opinion on riding a girl bike. After all, I do love the boy to pieces.

I asked Rob, and he said he wouldn't mind riding a girls bike--"All the less likely to have a "manly" injury anyway" he said. In fact, he thought I'd found a good deal on a bike for him . . . and he does love the Berlin Wall thing. ;)

I wouldn't ride a girl bike for things like mountain biking (especially purple ones). However, if I was in desperate need; I would hop on, puff up my manly chest and huge mountains for biceps, and yell "you want a piece of me?" at anyone who tried to make fun of me.

Come to think of it, that's pretty much what I did about a week ago when I rode Jessie's bike from our former trailer to yours... Yeah, that's right.
